A comparative analysis of the leukemic potential of mature T cells versus T cell precursors in a mouse model.

A three-year PhD studentship in the Applied Virology & Gene Therapy Group in the Georg-Speyer-Haus in Frankfurt/Main under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Dorothee von Laer is available immediately. The Georg-Speyer-Haus is associated with the University of Frankfurt/Main. The project is within the graduate school FIRST which provides postgraduate education in all aspects of translational biomedicine with a focus on the processes involved in drug research and development. In this three year postgraduate program, structured teaching (in English) is combined with interdisciplinary research projects within the state-of-the-art medical and pharmaceutical faculties.

Safety issues with novel gene therapies for the treatment of HIV need to be addressed in order to avoid leukaemia induced by insertional mutagenesis of a retroviral vector as it has been reported. The question whether gene transfer into mature T cells and hematopoietic stem cells have the same risk of generating leukaemia through activation of specific oncogenes. This will be addressed in mouse transplantation models.
Candidates should already possess a first class MSc (biology, chemistry, pharmacy or related discipline) or MD degree. Applications consisting of a cover letter indicating personal research goals/project preferences as well as a full curriculum vitae containing a brief summary of previous research product projects, together with copies of all relevant university certificates should be sent -preferably by email- to: Dr. Brigitte Held, Email: held@pharmchem.uni-frankfurt.de; postal address: Graduate School FIRST, Max-von-Laue-Str. 9, 60438 Frankfurt, Germany. Short listed applicants will be required to attend a selection workshop in Frankfurt which will take place presumably mid-December 2007 or early January 2008.
Informal enquiries to: Prof. Dr. med. Dorothee von Laer, Angewandte Virologie & Gentherapie, Georg-Speyer-Haus, Paul-Ehrlich Str. 42, 60596 Frankfurt am Main, Germany; Email: laer@em.uni-frankfurt.de; Mobile +49-172-4069569, Fax +49-69-63395145
