Scholarship Description: The overwhelming majority of PhD students in the AMC are paid employees, hired to work on existing research projects. In most cases, these students work on scientific topics conceived and developed by their PhD supervisor. But what if you want to follow your own ideas for research? What if you want to develop a research project yourself to get your PhD? If you have strong marks, a track record full of scientific promise, and ideas for innovative research, you could consider applying for an AMC PhD Scholarship. Each year, the AMC Graduate School for Medical Sciences awards a number of outstanding, recently graduated MSc and MD students with a PhD scholarship. This Scholarship enables students to set up a research project of their own design, in the AMC research group of their own choice, with a self-selected PhD supervisor (provided he or she agrees, of course).
Number of award(s): In 2014, six AMC PhD Scholarships are available.
Duration of award(s): Scholarships are offered for four years.
What does it cover? The scholarship covers the costs of the salary of a PhD student as a Research Trainee (OiO) for a period of four years, plus limited additional research expenses (bench fee). If the total cost of the planned project is likely to exceed this amount, the PhD student and the PhD supervisor will need to secure additional funding from other sources. The candidate is offered a four-year staff contract with the AMC or AMC Medical Research BV. This is a full-time position with an average of 36 hours a week, with pay and conditions in line with university standards for a Research Trainee (OiO). The AMC PhD Scholarship is a personal award, not a departmental one. If the PhD student leaves the AMC or abandons the approved project before the end of the four-year term the scholarship lapses. In case another personal grant is secured to fund the PhD research, the AMC scholarship can be partially converted into a travel grant for a period of six months.
Selection criteria: All applications will be evaluated by a selection committee consisting of five members, appointed in consultation with the President of the AMC Research Council, and chaired by the chair of the Board of the AMC Graduate School. Having checked that the formal requirements have been met, the committee will consider the originality and quality of the research proposal, its feasibility and practicability. After this first round of deliberations, a selected number of candidates will be invited for an interview. The final candidates are then recommended to the AMC Executive Board. In making these nominations, the committee seeks to achieve a fair balance across the many areas of research at the AMC. The final decision on the award of the AMC PhD Scholarships rests with the AMC Executive Board.
