The Heidelberg Center for American Studies (HCA) has two scholarships available for candidates accepted into its Ph.D. in American Studies program.

– 1 BASF Dissertation Scholarship

– 1 Scholarship in the graduate program (Promotionskolleg) funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg

The HCA is a central academic institution of the University of Heidelberg, encouraging higher education, promoting advanced research, and facilitating public debate. Ten disciplines provide the institutional framework of the HCA, manifesting a concentration of interdisciplinary expertise about the United States that is unique in Europe. These disciplines are American literature, economics, geography, history, law, musicology, philosophy, political science, religious studies, and sociology.

The Program: The Ph.D. in American Studies is a three-year structured graduate program conducted in the English language. Required classes include method and theory, academic writing, and presentation and media skills. Throughout the three year period, students are required to attend the program’s Ph.D. colloquium. Regular progress reports and orientation talks with advisors are an integral part of the program.

Upon completing the program, the candidate will be awarded the academic title of Dr. phil or Ph.D.

Eligibility: Candidates must apply and be accepted to the three-year Ph.D. program at the HCA. To be eligible for the Ph.D. program, candidates must have completed their M.A. degree.

The scholarships will be awarded based on the academic ranking of all applicants to the program. The ranking is generated based on academic achievement, which is judged by a panel of academics of the University of Heidelberg and the HCA.

Provisions: The BASF Dissertation Scholarship, funded by the BASF AG, consists of a monthly stipend of € 1,000. The Scholarship in the graduate program funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg consists of a monthly stipend of € 820. It also allows an annual average of € 410 for travel und research expenses. Both scholarships are awarded for a maximum of 36 months, subject to the successful completion of annual reviews.

The Jolanta and Soheyl Ghaemian Travel Fund: Ph.D. students pursuing research related to the United States at the University of Heidelberg are entitled to apply for grants from the Jolanta and Soheyl Ghaemian Travel Fund. Established by the Ghaemian Foundation as part of its commitment to promote arts and sciences in Heidelberg, the Fund is meant to facilitate research and scholarly exchange in the field of American Studies by providing grants for travel to a library, archive or academic conference. The Fund is able to make annual allocations up to a total amount of € 15,000. It is administered by the HCA.

Application Requirements: To apply for the Ph.D. in American Studies, please submit the following materials to the HCA by February 15, 2008:

• Completed application form
• Curriculum Vitae
• Notarized copy of secondary school diploma
• Notarized copies of university level degrees (bachelor’s, master’s, etc.)
• Proof of English competency (if not a native speaker)
• Two letters of recommendation
• Letter of intent from a professor at the University of Heidelberg stating the professor’s willingness to supervise the project
• Exposé of the project (not to exceed 15 pages, 1.5 spacing, font size 12)
