The Fuel Cells and Solid State Chemistry Division at Risø DTU is seeking two PhD students to evaluate solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) for use in combination with biomass derived fuels, and solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) for the production of synthetic fuels – both key technologies in a future sustainable energy system.

SOFCs and SOECs are electrochemical cells consisting of thin ceramic layers. In the fuel cell mode, electricity and heat is produced from fuels such as methane (biogas) or synthesis gas (CO + H2). In the electrolysis mode, electrical energy is transformed into chemical energy by splitting water vapour and carbon dioxide into H2 and CO (and oxygen). This synthesis gas may then be catalytically converted to synthetic fuels with high efficiency. Risø DTU is among the world’s leading developers of SOFCs and SOECs. The research is done in close collaboration with industry (e.g. the Danish company Topsoe Fuel Cell) and other universities.

Project description
Both projects will focus on electrochemical evaluation of different cell types developed at Risø DTU. Emphasis will be on the key parameters initial cell performance and durability. The aim is to gain a basic understanding and to find means to improve both performance and durability by for example modifying existing cell types. Advanced electrochemical and microscopic techniques will be used.

SOFC project: Fuel cells will be studied for the use biomass derived fuels. Here, the effect of characteristic impurities in such fuels will be addressed.

SOEC project: Electrolyser cells will be studied for co-electrolysis of CO2 and H2O.

Qualifications
• Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering, chemistry, materials science, physics, or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree
• Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamical group
• Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken

Salary and appointment terms
The positions are financed by a mobility fellowship program, which is only granted to students who have graduated from other universities than Technical University of Denmark.

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.
