Job Description: A major challenge in health economics is the valuation of benefits from alternative health care interventions. The quality adjusted life year (QALY) has become the main valuation technique. For example, it is the valuation method recommended by bodies such as the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), the Scottish Medicine Committee (SMC), the Canadian Agency for Drugs & Technologies in Health (CADTH) and the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC). QALYs are also commonly employed in randomised controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the value of alternative health technologies and drugs. The QALY focuses on health outcomes, ignoring ‘patient experience factors’. Where such factors matter reliance on the QALY may lead to inefficient decisions. This PhD will build on a project currently underway, funded by the NIHR and managed by the MRC as part of the Methodology Research Programme (Professor Ryan is PI), which is developing a conceptual map of the patient’s experience, and identifying economic methods for valuing patient experiences. Within this proposed PhD methods identified as potentially useful in the MRC project will be incorporated in RCTs within CHaRT (which Dr Burr directs), and consideration will be given to the policy implications of taking a broader measure of value.
