Job Description: Rendering of 3D sound in a partly virtual multi-user environmentThe main purpose of the project is to investigate and develop methods on how to facilitate a multi-user environment by means of 3D sound, most likely using binaural technology. The environment consists of both physical participants and virtual visitors in addition to a physical room which in itself holds acoustical properties. Participant and visitors must be able to communicate in a multi-modal way which also includes vision and haptics. In order to transmit sound events which can be shared by the parties a virtual layer must be defined. This layer does not only define the (simple) streaming of real-time recorded sound but also a set of parameters which can be transmitted, e.g. position of participants/visitors, head rotation, moving and positioning of audible objects and (acoustical) room parameters. The project will deal with a possible reduction or limitation of such parameters, and will address how synthesized sound combined with the real world sound of the listener can be rendered in the environment given (“augmented reality”).

The project is part of a European cooperation project financed by the EU (and partners).
