Job Description: A PhD student position is opened at the Microwave Electronics Laboratory at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience – MC2.Microwave Electronics Laboratory’s strategy to increase system related research is now clearly visible in the results for 2009. Beside our traditional work on semiconductor devices and circuits, we are now demonstrating more system oriented results for future communication systems and remote sensing. Most of our work is project oriented together with other universities, companies and institutes, where Microwave Electronics Laboratory is responsible for hardware research and development.

Job description

The main research objective for the PhD student position is to study all aspects of phase noise in communication systems, all the way from how phase noise can be measured and modeled, to how to make system simulations including phase noise, and how to counteract the negative effects on the communication system performance using signal processing.

Required qualifications

You should have a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or similar, with a focus on digital communications, signal processing, or microwave electronics and high grades in the core courses. Some experience in the described fields are advantageous. Furthermore, an interest in interdisciplinary work with researchers and engineers from other fields is essential, as are skills in simulation techniques and mathematical analysis. You should be fluent in English, have good collaboration skills, and be able to communicate your results in writing and in presentations. Teaching experience is an advantage.

A PhD student position is an appointment that offers the opportunity to obtain a PhD degree. With a PhD degree in this area, you will be in great demand from Swedish as well as international industry, and you will have a very good basis for further academic research as well. The position is for a period of maximum five years. Up to 20% of this time will be used for undergraduate teaching and other departmental work, and the remaining part is spent on completing the research and courses required for a Ph.D. degree. A monthly salary is paid. The position can commence during August, 2010.
