Job Description: Target tracking is a major function in any sensor system measuring moving objects. The input consists of target observations. These observations originate from various kinds of sensor systems such as radar, transponder systems, TV, IR, sonar, and acoustic sensors. The result of the tracking algorithm is a surveillance picture describing the covered volume by multitude of objects and their character, such as movement and type of object. The surveillance picture is further used by the user of the system or automatic functions. In particular, the tracking algorithm plays an important role for data enhancement and compilation. This is due to the fact that sensor data never are perfect. The task is an intricate and elaborate process. The success of this process depends strongly on the used algorithms, and a good result gives more useful systems with a more accurate performance.

The Ph.D. student will be employed at the Department of Signals and Systems at Chalmers. The employment is normally for 5 years, and involves about 60% own research, 20% courses and 20% teaching duties. The department has teaching both in Swedish and English.
Job description

The Ph.D. project concerns analysis and development of new algorithms for target tracking in complicated environments, involving multiple targets and uncertain measurements due to partial occlusion, heavy clutter, etc. The project is a collaboration between the Signal Processing Group at Chalmers University of Technology, Saab Electronic Defence Systems, and Saab Bofors Dynamics, and it is sponsored by Vinnova and Swedish industry under the program NFFP 5.
Required qualifications

A suitable background is a M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Automation, Engineering Physics or similar. A strong background in Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics and Signal Processing is an advantage. Due to the nature of the project, a Swedish citizenship is required.
