The position is located within the division of Combustion at the Department of Applied Mechanics, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg. Applied Mechanics is leading the vehicle- and mechanical engineering research of international state-of-the-art research within the five different divisions of the Department, very often in close relation with national and international industry. The research is of both fundamental and applied character. The department has about 160 employees.One vacant position is available financed through Chalmers Combustion Engine Research Centre (CERC). CERC is established in 1995 as a national competence centre where academy and industry jointly perform research of mutual interest. Member companies are: ABB, GM Powertrain, Honda, Mecel Engine Systems, Scania, Statoil, Volvo Powertrain, Volvo Car Corp, Volvo Penta and Wärtsilä.
Job description
Since combustion of fossil fuel produces carbon dioxide contributing to global climate changes and fossil fuel is a very limited resource, there is a strong interest in reduced fossil fuel consumption and usage of alternative and renewable bio-fuels.

PhD student, Direct Injection Gasoline Engines
One possibility to improve engine efficiency for gasoline engines is to apply direct injection and stratified charge operation using advanced injectors.

The project is mainly numerical, where models of different physical processes in the engine will be developed, validated, combined, and implemented into a commercial CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) code in order to investigate mixture formation, combustion, and emissions formation for different fuels (gasoline, ethanol, methanol, and butanol including mixtures between them).

Details about the employment:
The PhD student education lasts for five years and will normally include 20 percent departmental work, mostly teaching duties. The salary for the positions are specified in Chalmers’ general agreement for PhD student positions.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a Master degree awarded by an internationally recognized University in Mechanical Engineering or Physics. Knowledge in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, chemistry, and combustion is considered essential. Knowledge of advanced software and CFD methods is seen as an advantage. The cover letter must also clearly describe the motivation for completing a PhD at Chalmers.
