Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application:

PhD student position in hydrology with specialization in groundwater modeling

at the Department of Earth Sciences, Program of Air, Water and Landscape Sciences
Starting time: from the closing of the application dead-line, as agreed upon

Importance of understanding the pollutant spreading patterns in contaminated areas is well recognized. A great challenge is the identification of appropriate process for models for so-called multiphase contaminants in the case of heterogeneous geology. This PhD project focuses on investigating the spreading patterns of chlorinated solvents in fractured formations. This type of pollutants are present as DNAPLs forming their own liquid phase which in combination with the heterogeneoity of the fractured rock creates a complicated spreading behavior. The work will consist of experimental studies as well as numerical modeling and model development. The project is a collaboration between Uppsala University and Colorado School of Mines and the student will have a supervisor at both universities. The research is financed by the Swedish National Research Council.

The successful applicant should have an academic degree in hydrology/geohydrology or a corresponding degree in civil and environmental engineering or geosciences. Solid background in mathematics and physics/chemistry is a requirement as is basic familiarity with computers. Earlier experience in programming and numerical methods is an advantage as is experience in experimental techniques.

A PhD student is supposed to mostly dedicate her/his time on her/his own PhD studies. Other assignments within the department, such as teaching and administrative tasks can be included upto 20%. To be employed as a PhD student In order to be eligible you will have to be registered as a Ph.D. student. The rules governing this process can be found (in Swedish) in Högskoleförordningen 5 kap 1-7 §§. Local rules apply for salaries.
