PhD student position in the CALIPHO group,Switzerland
A PhD student position is available in the CALIPHO group (Computational Analysis and Laboratory Investigation of Proteins of Human Origin) affiliated both to the Geneva University and to the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics.
The CALIPHO group research combines molecular and cellular biological methods, in vivo experiments on model organisms and bioinformatics in order to decipher the function of uncharacterized human proteins.
The identification of novel biological messengers such as hormones, growth factors or cytokines often represents landmark discoveries, with significant impact for both fundamental and applied science. The recent completion of the annotation of the human proteome by the Swiss-Prot group demonstrated that among the 2’000 human proteins which are still lacking experimental annotations, some have the profile of potential biological messengers (small secreted proteins). Seven have been selected by a careful bioinformatics analysis for further experimental characterization. They all have already been chemically synthesized and their 3D structure is currently being analysed by NMR.
This PhD project will consist in investigating the function and localization of these 7 putative proteins, and to identify their receptors using an expression cloning strategy. It should lead to the in-depth characterization of 1-3 new human secreted biological messengers along with their cognate receptors.
Required background: Master 2 in biology or biochemistry or equivalent diploma
Starting date : 1st September 2010 (negotiable)
Length of contract: 3-4 years.
