The subject areas are marine ecology and plant ecology, ecotoxicology, plant physiology and plant systematics. Part of the research has direct environmental and social relevance and is often conducted broad and interdisciplinary. Department approximately 140 persons, of which about 35 are teachers and researchers and about 50 are doctoral.

Course Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing the graduate programme leading to the Swedish degree of ‘filosofie doktor’ (PhD).

Study Subject: Project Description: Department of Ecology and Environmental botany seeking a PhD project “Benthic food webs in the Baltic Sea.”

How species interact with each other affect the functioning of ecosystems and the ecosystem services we depend on. Understanding how the food web is built is also necessary to predict how it will react to disturbances. Although we know so far little about how species interact with each other, mainly because of methodological limitations. DNA techniques, particularly DNA barcoding, provide opportunities to address some of these limitations. This is particularly important for benthic invertebrate food web dominated by detritivores. Most of the knowledge about these food webs based on interactions of macrobenthos that usually are omnivores. How microscopic benthic species often specialize in a particular food interact in food webs are largely unknown. The overall objective of this project is to improve our knowledge of how marine benthic food webs are structured and understand the importance of trophic flexibility and omnivore the food web and network stability. In addition, this project will examine how food webs mediate the effects of anthropogenic disturbance in the benthic ecosystems.
