The Danish Meteorological Institute invites applications for a PhD student position funded by the Programme Commission on Energy and Environment (EnMi), which is a part of the Danish Council for Strategic Research (Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation). The PhD position is linked to the project “Solar/electric heating systems in the future energy system”.
The successful candidate will carry out simulations with numerical weather prediction models computing solar radiation and other relevant meteorological weather parameters suitable as prognostic input to heating units making use of solar energy in a future energy system. The work will be done in cooperation with Danish Technical University (DTU – department for Solar Energy (DTU.BYG) and the Institute for Mathematical Modelling, IMM). The emphasis will be on numerical simulations of surface solar radiation in Denmark (DK) using atmospheric numerical forecast models. The work involves also the computation of radiation climatology for stations in DK measuring global solar radiation. The study gives an opportunity for studying different model formulations of clouds affecting solar radiation. In addition, it is expected that ensemble simulations are carried out to study uncertainty aspects of the forecasts.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Geophysics, Meteorology, Environmental Sciences, Mathematical Modelling, Computer Programming or a closely related subject, and will write his/her dissertation in a relevant discipline. The successful candidate will be located at Danish Meteorological Institute in Copenhagen and will work closely with the Niels Bohr Institute of University of Copenhagen and the Danish Technical University (DTU) involved into the above mentioned project related to Solar energy.
Employment and salary is according to existing Danish agreements. The position lasts for three years and should result in the successful candidate receiving a doctoral degree.
DMI wants to contribute to equal opportunities for women and men, and ask all qualified persons to apply regardless of age, sexual- or ethnic background.
The application marked “041-0005.2008″, including a complete CV, statement of proposed research, and two references should be directed, not later than 13th June 2008 to:
The Director General, Danish Meteorological Institute, 100, Lyngbyvej, DK-2100 Copenhagen Ø, Denmark or job@dmi.dk.
DMI is an institution under the Ministry of Climate and Energy and carries out a forecast and warning service as well as continuous monitoring of weather, climate and related environmental conditions in the atmosphere, on ground and at sea, in order to secure human life, equipment and property, and to create a basis for economic and environmental planning in the society. Furthermore, R&D is carried out within the DMI working areas.
