PhD Student Position of Primary Disintegration of Wood, Sweden
Job Description:The division Forest Products and Chemical Engineering comprises three research groups which to a large extent work closely with each other: Forest Products Chemical Engineering, Sustainable Chemical Engineering and Chemical Environmental Science. Most of our projects are carried out in close contact with other universities (national and international) and companies. Today we are about 20 persons and we are planning to expand the coming years.
The forest based industry today is one of Sweden’s most important export industries. In the future it will acquire even greater importance as the raw material, wood, is renewable and that the forest based industry is the best possible foundation for the future biorefineries. In the future forest based biorefineries materials, chemicals and fuels will be produced. At the division of Forest Products and Chemical Engineering we are working with project related to new products and processes that are steps towards a biorefinery as well as with projects aiming to improve the understanding of the present processes in the forest based industry.
Job description
In this area there will be a group of PhD-students working with related problems. Today there are two PhD-students and we are now looking for the third. The new PhD-student will work with the very first step in the process of converting wood to products, chemicals and/or fuel which is impregnation of the wood with process chemicals. This will be an important step in future processes but is in fact an important step in today’s pulp mills. However, surprisingly little is today known about this process. The aim with this PhD-project is to obtain a deeper knowledge about the impregnation and based on that develop models based on fundamental principles which can be used to translate laboratory data to industrial conditions. There will be both experimental and theoretical items in the project.
The position is limited to maximum five years, which corresponds to full-time research studies during four years. In addition, teaching in the undergraduate or masters curricula at Chalmers could be included corresponding to a maximum of one year, teaching work distributed over the whole time of the position.
Required qualifications
To be eligible for the position you should have a MSc degree in Chemistry engineering, Chemistry engineering with physics, Biotechnology or a corresponding curriculum. You should have a good knowledge in English and be able to communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form.
