PhD Student Position – Population Genetics

A PhD student position in Population Genetics / Evolutionary Ecology is available at the Institute of Fisheries Ecology at the Johann Heinrich von Th?nen-Institute (vTI), the Federal Institute of Rural Areas, Forestry and
Fisheries in Hamburg, Germany in the laboratory of Reinhold Hanel.  The student will join a collaborative research group studying genetic diversity, speciation and the evolution of key-innovations in Antarctic
notothenioids.

The project includes population genetic and molecular phylogenetic analyses on species of Antarctic fish, primarily across the Scotia Ridge by investigating mitochondrial control region sequences, microsatellite
markers, and sequences of the nuclear hemoglobine and antifreeze glycoprotein genes. The candidate should be willing to join at least one Antarctic survey as well as research visits to partner institutions.

The PhD student will receive a salary according to the German pay  scale (E13/2 TV-L). Applicants should have a master’s degree or  equivalent in evolutionary biology or a related field. In addition, laboratory experience in molecular biology and/or genetics is desired.  Interested candidates should send a CV, statement of interest, and  contact information of two potential referees to:
