PhD-student position in Atmospheric sciences and oceanography focusing on atmospheric physics

at the Department of Meteorology .Ref.nr 617-1467-08. Applications should arrive no later than June 23, 2008

This Ph.D. project in Atmospheric Physics combines experimental and modelling studies to investigate Polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) and their interplay with the chemistry and dynamics of the stratosphere. PSCs play an important role in the formation of the Arctic and Antarctic ozone hole. Further, PSCs are sensitive indicators for the state and the variability of the stratosphere.

The experimental work will involve the further development and application of a lidar at Esrange in Northern Sweden. Lidar measurements of PSCs will, together with meteorological data, serve as input to microphysical model studies of PSC particle properties and their dependence on atmospheric conditions. Of particular interest is the effect of mountain waves on the occurrence of PSCs. The complementary use of satellite data on PSCs and stratospheric composition is anticipated. Some computer programming knowledge and/or experimental experience would therefore be of advantage.

The initial appointment is for one year and can be prolonged to a maximum of four years full-time studies. The selection of a successful candidate will be based on previous academic records and on the applicant´s ability to pursue research training. In addition to the PhD studies the student may also be asked to work with departmental duties such as teaching (max. 20%).
