PhD Studentship: Creativity and Education,York St John University, UK
Job Description: This studentship will involve working under the broad heading of creativity and education, with a particular emphasis upon qualitative methods. It is expected that candidates will:
* have studied or worked in formal or informal educational settings with children aged between 0 and 11 years
* be fascinated by children as thinkers and learners and the role of the adult in providing supportive contexts which build upon young children’s curiosity and intrinsic motivation.
The particular aspect of study is negotiable, depending on the particular knowledge, expertise and interests of the successful candidate. The following aspects, or combinations of aspects, of creativity and education give some guidance as to suitable areas of study:
Creativity/ playfulness in the early years or primary school
Early years or primary school art(s) education
The impact of transition upon children’s creativity, thinking and learning
Developing supportive contexts for maintaining a multimodal approach to thinking and learning
Developing understanding of drawing as a tool for thinking and learning in the primary school
Dr Kathy Ring will be the lead supervisor. Originally an early years teacher and deputy head teacher in primary schools in Warwickshire and North Yorkshire, she has experience of researching in a wide range of Early Years Foundation Stage settings and with children aged between four and seven in primary schools. She is particularly interested in developing collaborative research with teachers, practitioners and local authorities. Kathy is currently leading the development of an Early Years Arts Forum with Tower Hamlets local authority in London, bringing together a range of arts workers and practitioners engaged in action research in their individual settings. She is also an invited member of the recently formed steering group ‘ReFocus North Yorkshire’. This local authority led group, with its links to the national ‘Sightlines’ organisation, is committed to supporting and developing understanding of children as researchers and is particularly influenced by the work of ‘Reggio Children’ in Italy.
It is expected that the holder of the studentship would be able, if appropriate, to join staff and students working with Professor Jean McNiff on self-study action research methodologies.
