Job Description:

HLXB9 is a homeobox containing transcription factor that has previously been shown to be expressed at high levels in CD34+ haematopoietic cells, suggestive of a role in haematopoietic differentiation. Previous studies have suggested that HLXB9 can function as an oncogene in infant acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) but as a tumour suppressor in solid tumours. Furthermore, we have recently demonstrated that it is frequently epigenetically inactivated in acute lymphoid leukaemia (ALL), suggesting a tumour suppressor role in lymphoid leukaemia. In this project we will investigate the function role of HLXB9 in both ALL and AML cells. Both the WT gene and HLXB9 fused to ETV6 will be assessed for a function role in control of cell proliferation, survival and differentiation. In addition we will further investigate the frequency of the HLXB9-ETV6 fusion in infant leukaemia and identify other cytogenetic abnormalities leading to disruption of these genes. Through these studies we will determine the extent and importance of disruption of normal HLXB9 expression in both AML and ALL.

Value of the Award and Eligibility
The award will cover full fees for UK and EU students and will provide a competitive stipend (£13,650 in the first year). International students may apply but the fees will only be paid at the UK/EU level
