PhD Studentship: Development of a Multi-Phase Flow Meter, UK
Job Description: A fully-funded, 3-year PhD EPSRC studentship is available for a project focused on developing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, in combination with various other measurement methods, to provide a novel multi-phase flow meter able to simultaneously quantify oil, water, solid and gas flowrates in pipelines. This is a generally unmet but absolutely vital need in the oil industry (which will be the focus in this project) and is an essential measurement requirement in virtually all aspects of off-shore oil production, including minimizing environmental impact. The device will also find extensive application in the nuclear, food, mining and biofuels industry. The project is part of a large research consortium led by the University of Leeds. Each partner (from both industry and academia) has a particular measurement expertise; these will be developed and fused into a single instrument as part of the project. The student will thus gain unique experience with respect to a wide range of modern flow measurement methodologies.
Applicants must possess a First Class or a 2:1 degree in a relevant discipline such as chemical engineering, engineering, chemistry or physics. Full funding is only available to UK and EU nationals. The starting date is 1 October 2010 at the latest.
