PhD Studentship, Multi-Service Networking Techniques for Rural Satellite Internet Access, Research, UK Students

Job Description: The provision of Next Generation Access (NGA) services to the “final third” of the UK population is recognised as a serious technical and financial challenge. Poor broadband access is one of the major problems for rural communities inhibiting engagement in the Digital Economy for the unserved communities.

This PhD topic will explore how satellite access technology can be realised to delivery next generation internet services to these unserved communities. New radio resource management and networking support will be developed to allow service operators to tailor performance of the service to match the increasingly wide spectrum of user expectations. New techniques will be derived for dynamic variation of Quality of Service (QoS) and bandwidth to substantially increase the flexibility of offered services. These will be explored through advanced network simulation. The student will work alongside a satellite access ISP to collect traffic data to construct traffic models for evaluation of the performance and efficiency of the new techniques. The results will be proposed for next generation standards to influence the way in which future broadband access services are designed, delivered and operated.

The successful candidate will have a first or upper second class degree in Engineering or Computer Science. Applicants may have completed a Master of Science postgraduate degree/diploma in computer science or electronic engineering. She/He will be expected to have or gain advanced skills in simulation and be able to work in a multi-disciplinary team to develop an understanding of technologies relating to the Future Internet.

Funding Eligibility:

Tuition fees will be paid at UK/EU rates, for 2010/2011 this is £3,400. A maintenance grant will also be paid for 2010/2011 which is £13,590. The studentship will be fully funded by dot.rural, which is supported by RCUK Digital Economy Programme.
