PhD Studentship Genetic and Environmental Drivers of Fruit Composition in Relation to Sensory Quality in Blueberry, UK

May 20, 2010

Job Description :At present only 1-3% of UK consumed blueberries are grown indigenously despite the UK climate being suitable for their cultivation. This fully funded 3 year studentship forms part of a broader industry-academic consortium aimed at developing a range of scientific tools and knowledge to kick start a UK blueberry industry.

A key factor hindering development of the UK industry is the availability of UK adapted germplasm producing fruit meeting the sensory expectations of UK consumers. The aims of the studentship will therefore be to i) examine phytochemical diversity within a range of germplasm grown at different UK locations, ii) examine the impact of different growing regimes on fruit phytochemistry, iii) populate a genetic linkage map with phytochemical data, iv) conduct sensory trials using a variety of fruit germplasm and v) map phytochemical onto sensory data in order to gain an understanding of the chemical drivers of fruit flavour and aroma.

The studentship will be under the joint supervision of Drs. Robert Hancock and Julie Graham at the Scottish Crop Research Institute in Dundee and Dr. Alistair Paterson at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. The student will have access to state of the art analytical equipment (GC/MS, LC/MS, HPLC) at SCRI while full training in the design and analysis of sensory trials will be undertaken within the Strathclyde Institute for Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences. In addition to the academic environment, the student will have the opportunity to work with a number of industrial consortium members including multiple retailers and key UK growers and processors.

The studentship represents an excellent opportunity for a graduate or postgraduate in the broad areas of biological or sensory science to receive state of the art analytical training within the context of an applied project with firm commercial objectives.

The studentship is fully supported with an annual tax-free stipend of £13290 in the first year.

Closing date for applications is June 28th 2010.

Further details and application procedures can be obtained by contacting Dr. Robert Hancock (rob.hancock@scri.ac.uk).
