Biophysical and Systems Biology analysis of cross talk between cellular bioenergetics and programmed cell death.
Research Topic: Apoptosis or programmed cell death is regulated by complex biochemical signalling networks within living cells. Impaired apoptosis can result in developmental disorders and cancer. Most recently, a crisis of cellular bioenergetics has been associated with apoptotic cell death, but also evidence exist that such effects may be conteracted by cytoprotective effects like increased metabolic activity. Systems biology, a combined approach between computational biology, biophysics, control engineering and biochemistry, has proven to be a tool for a rigorous investigation of decision points between cellular survival and death and will offer novel strategies for therapeutic interventions. The successful candidate will generate computational models that will be validated by confocal microscopy of living cells. The applicant will work interactively with the experimentalists to discuss model validity and restrictions and eventually will also perform their own microscopy!

Candidate Profil: The candidate holds a solid background in numerical analysis (master degree of computational physics or biochemistry/biophysics with experience in mathematical analyses and programming, (e.g. C++, MATLAB, Mathematica or alike). Willingness of learning the necessary biologic context is essential. Experiences with confocal microscopy would be a plus, but not vital. Strong commitment and enthusiasm is expected.
