Much of the work taking place at the Magnetic Resonance Research Centre applies spectroscopic and imaging magnetic resonance techniques to study catalysts and catalytic reactor operation. Whilst part of the group focuses on developing new measurement technologies, another strong motivation for the research is to be able to design greener catalytic processes.
The group now has unique flow imaging datasets of gas-liquid flows in fixed-bed reactors. The natural development of this work is to use these data to help the development and validation of numerical codes used in reactor design. The fact that validated codes do not currently exist means significant over-design of existing processes – in turn this means an enhanced carbon footprint as well as much higher capital and running costs than are necessary. There will be significant opportunity to work with industrial partners during the course of this project.
