PhD Studentship in Earthquake Engineering at UCL
Earthquake Building Damage Assessment: An Experimental and Analytical studyA 3.5 year EPSRC studentship is available for a resourceful individual to carry out a PhD in Earthquake Engineering within the Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering Department of University College London. The student will explore the question “How can I reliably predict earthquake damage in existing buildings due to earthquakes?”. This will involve analysis and testing of large-scale reinforced concrete beam and column elements under cyclic loading in a 2.5MN Instron hydraulic testing system. The effect of reinforcement detailing deficiencies typical of members designed solely for gravity loads on structural damage and deformation will be investigated. In particular the effects of longitudinal bar slippage, poor confinement, shear reinforcement and applied loading history will be determined. Tools will be developed for damage prediction that can be integrated into novel building seismic design and assessment methods.
The successful applicant will become a part of the EPSRC-funded Earthquake and People Interaction Centre, (EPICENTRE), and be expected to interact with researchers in coastal and earthquake engineering, and psychology. Applicants will also be required to present / publish results. The nature of the project should suit students who are responsible, adaptable and passionate about carrying out analyses and physical experiments. The ideal candidate will have a good background in civil engineering and reinforced concrete design. Experience in structural dynamics, materials and/or earthquake engineering would be an advantage.
Application deadline: 17th November 2008
Interviews: 17th -21st November 2008
Project Start Date: December 2008/ January 2009
The Funding:
The studentship is funded by the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC). The scholarship covers UCL registration fees and provides a stipend between £14,900 – £16,000/annum. Travel expenses and research equipment will also be paid for.
Application Procedure:
Suitable applicants should send a cover letter and CV to t.rossetto (at) ucl.ac.uk
Applicants should also apply at the same time to UCL by submitting the general PhD application form, available online, entering Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering as the department and naming Dr Tiziana Rossetto as the proposed supervisor. The original should be sent to the Admissions office; and a copy should also be sent to: Dr Tiziana Rossetto, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University College London, Gower St, London WC1E 6BT, UK.
Eligibility:
This studentship is funded by EPSRC. Potential candidates must satisfy two main eligibility criteria: academic and residency. The academic requirement is the equivalent of at least an upper second (2:1) first degree or an MSc in an Engineering or Physical Science. The residency requirement is that all British and European (EU) citizens are eligible. Non-EU citizens are not eligible (unless they have indefinite leave to remain from the UK Home Office). If in doubt about this please contact the department.
