PhD Studentship in Mathematical Analysis of Light Emission from Optical Resonators

This studentship is available from 24 September 2008 for a period of 3½ years.

Applications are invited for the above studentship.  The successful student will be part of the new EPSRC-funded project “Squeezing Light from Optical Resonators”, a project that seeks to develop new methods to predict how light escapes from optical resonators.  Optical resonators are very small optical components which trap light by total internal reflection and have important applications as small lasers, as sensing devices and in optical communications.  This project will investigate how the light which leaks from such systems can be predicted from a shape deformation using short-wavelength approximations.  The student will be based in the School of Mathematical Sciences, working within the Complex and Disordered Systems group.

Students should have a strong degree in mathematics or mathematical physics and a willingness to learn new analytical and numerical techniques.

Due to funding restrictions, this studentship is only open to students who qualify as HEU (Home/European Union) for fee purposes.
