PhD studentship in optical coherence tomography – Sheffield, UK
An EPSRC-funded PDRA position and a PhD position, both tenable for 3 years, are available from 1st Feb 2008. Working alongside each other, both post-holders will contribute to the development of a novel optical technique to determine the collagen structure of native and tissue-engineered articular cartilage. Both posts are based in the biophotonics group of Dr Steve Matcher, within the 5*-rated Dept of Engineering Materials, University of Sheffield. The work will benefit from collaboration with colleagues in the cartilage-engineering group, Centre for Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering.
The PDRA will be responsible for adapting a commercial swept-source OCT system to polarization-sensitive operation and with designing a novel optical interface. Candidates should have a PhD in Physics or Engineering, with a substantial optics background. Practical experience with optical design techniques such as ZEMAX, electro-optics, signal processing and LabView programming is highly desirable. Salary is in the range £25,134 – £25,889 per annum.
The PhD student will take responsibility for the development, optimisation and validation of data inversion algorithms. A keen interest in computer modelling, data analysis and optics is needed, as is a general interest in biomechanics and tissue engineering. Training in complimentary techniques such as diffusion-tensor magnetic resonance Imaging will also be available. Applicants should hold or expect to obtain a first degree (UK upper second class or equivalent minimum) or a Masters degree in physics, materials, electronic engineering or a related discipline. Candidates from the UK and EU will be eligible for full funding which includes tuition fees and stipend (currently £12,600 per annum).
As some travel may be necessary, a driving licence valid in the UK would be advantageous for both post-holders.
