Job Description: The Process Systems Engineering Group in the School of Engineering, Cranfield University is a small vibrant multidisciplinary team which offer a very succesful MSc course in Process Systems Engineering which attracts students from across the EU and overseas. The Group also has very strong research activity with funding from major energy companies and government organisations.
With the decline of conventional oil reserves, energy companies have been diverting their attention to exploit unconventional oil. About 40% of the world’s known oil resource is heavy and extra heavy oil. Heavy oil has a density of >900kg/m3 and viscosity above 5000cP (treacle like). Current published work on multiphase flows is limited to oil with viscosity below 50cP. It is known that oil density and viscosity have dramatic effects on flow behaviour and current prediction models are grossly inadequate. To enable energy efficient extraction with minimal environmental impact, in depth understanding of three phase (oil, water and gas) flow characteristics of heavy oil is urgently required. Such knowledge will enable the development of
a. efficient enhance transport technology to minimise energy use and environmental impact and
b. in situ metering technology for facilitate production optimisation and fiscal purposes
This studentship is made possible with the support of Neftemer Ltd, a small company specialising in developing multiphase metering technology for the oil and gas industry. The student will be part of a very active research team that currently has 3 research fellows and 8 PhD students working in related areas.
Applicants for the post must have an upper second-class degree in engineering or related discipline. A good knowledge in fluid flow is essential. Experience in instrumentation and computer programming would be a distinctive advantage.
