Scholarship Description: The control of parasitic worms in cattle relies heavily on the use of anthelmintic drugs. However, the intensive use of these drugs has led to the development of resistant worm isolates in different parts of the world, including Belgium. Resistance is currently diagnosed by measuring a reduction of worm egg shedding after treatment, using the ‘faecal egg count reduction test’ (FECRT). However, the FECRT is labour intensive and prone to confounding factors. The laboratory for Parasitology is looking for a PhD student to optimise the sampling strategy for the FECRT using mathematical modeling techniques.
