Job Description: This studentship is a collaboration between the University of Leeds and Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful applicant will be based at the Institute of Psychological Sciences, University of Leeds (supervised by Dr Daryl O’Connor & Dr Peter Gardner), but the majority of work will be undertaken at the Bradford Royal Infirmary, with supervision provided by Dr Jane Ward at the Bradford Institute for Health Research.
The studentship will focus on the area of patient safety, and more specifically, the associations between the clinical work environment (for example, the characteristics of the job, patient-staff ratios etc) and the relationship with patient safety incidents (e.g. healthcare infections, medication errors, inaccurate observations). The research will use a number of different methods –questionnaires, focus groups/interviews, and diary methods – to understand more about how the work environment impacts upon a variety of patient safety outcomes within an acute hospital setting.

The candidate will ideally have an interest working in NHS settings, combined with an understanding of a variety of research methods and analytical approaches. Good oral communication skills are imperative given the applied research setting, and all applicants should be prepared to provide an example of their written work. In addition to their research, the candidate will be expected to make a contribution to the departmental teaching portfolio, as is standard for post-graduates.
