Despite this interest and the long history, however, because of the limited knowledge currently available and the empirical nature of it, there is still a lack of fundamental understanding of some of the physical, mechanical and chemical characteristics of lime mixtures.

This project aims to advance our knowledge of lime as a construction material, by exploring emerging technologies for investigating chemical reactions in lime mixtures, new uses of lime and innovative approaches to the use of hydraulic additives.

The ideal candidate for this project should have:

  • A strong interest in lime as construction material and, possibly, an interest in the chemistry of lime and cement;
  • A minimum of upper second class honours degree or equivalent GPA from non-UK universities (preference for 1st class honours) in disciplines such as chemistry, material science, archaeological science, architecture, surveying and civil engineering. A Master’s Degree in a relevant subject area will be considered advantageous.
  • Language proficiency (appropriate IELTS score, if required).
    Additionally, experience or interest in:
  • Experimental work in laboratories of chemistry and/or civil engineering will be considered advantageous.
  • Use of PHREEQC and/or Arduino (or similar boards) will be considered an asset

Eligibility requirement:
• Academic excellence of the proposed student i.e. 2:1 (or equivalent GPA from non-UK universities [preference for 1st class honours]); or a Masters (preference for Merit or above); or APEL evidence of substantial practitioner achievement.
• Appropriate IELTS score, if required.
