Phd Studentship Scottish Agricultural College

Application Closing Date: Mon, 28 Jul 2008

Location: Aberdeen

The aim of this project is to improve the nitrogen (N) use efficiency of arable cropping systems through a better understanding of the underlying soil processes.

Many successful low-input and organic systems rely on a fertility-building phase based on N-fixing legumes as an alternative to applications of mineral N fertiliser. There is increasing interest in applying these systems more widely but significant N losses to the environment may occur; a result of the lack of synchrony between the flush of N released from the residues of previously-grown legumes and the N demands of a subsequent crop. The rate, timing and quantity of N release from legume residues are driven by soil microbial activity, which is affected by soil pH. However, the overall effect of soil pH on the microbial processes that control N fixation, decomposition and N loss in these systems is unknown. This project will study the effects of soil pH on the transfer of N fixed by legumes to subsequent crops.

The student will be part of the Crop and Soil Systems Research Group, where you will work alongside a team of scientists engaged in an active programme of research that aims to develop resilient and sustainable systems of crop production that are economically viable, but also environmentally and socially acceptable. The project is in collaboration with the Institute of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Aberdeen, where the student will be registered for a higher degree. This will give access to the excellent research facilities available at both SAC and the University of Aberdeen.

Applicants should hold, or expect to receive, at least an upper second class honours degree in agriculture, microbiology, environmental science or a related discipline. A full current driving licence is essential for travel to remote field sites.
Stipend: £12940 per annum, funded by the Roland Sutton Trust.
Duration: 3 Years, from 1st October 2008.
