PhD Studentship: Self-assembly and Electronic Properties of Adsorbed Molecules @ Warwick, UK
PhD Studentship: Self-assembly and Electronic Properties of Adsorbed Molecules @ Warwick, UK
Description : A PhD Position is available at the University of Warwick, Department of Chemistry, to experimentally investigate the electronic structure and the self-assembly properties of adsorbed organic molecules.
The successful candidate will work under the joint supervision of Prof. Tim Jones and Dr. Giovanni Costantini and will have the opportunity to use state of the art experimental equipment including organic molecular beam deposition (OMBD), scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS and UPS) facilities. The aim of the project is to determine the effects of charge transfer on the assembly of functional molecular building blocks deposited on metallic substrates. The control of molecular self-assembly and of the energy level alignment in metal-organic junctions represents a fundamental aspect of nano-fabrication and molecular electronics and photovoltaics.
The PhD student will be part of a multidisciplinary research team within a collaborative EPSRC-funded project involving two experimental groups at the University of Warwick (Costantini, Jones) and one theoretical group at King’s College London (Dr. Alessandro De Vita). A very close teamwork is programmed between the three groups with various occasions for collaboration and exchanges. Measurement campaigns at UK and overseas synchrotron facilities are anticipated.
For further information please contact Prof. Tim Jones (t.s.jones@warwick.ac.uk ) and Dr. Giovanni Costantini (g.costantini@warwick.ac.uk).
Applicants will have or expect to obtain a good degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science/Engineering or a related discipline and, due to funding restrictions, must be EU citizens. The studentship is funded for 42 months and provides support for a stipend and fees, which will be paid at a home/EU level.
