Job Description: The Photonics Group offers two fully funded Marie Curie Trainee PhD studentships on THz photonics devices and systems. These highly competitive and prestigious studentships are offered to exceptional candidates who come from the European Union (excluding the UK). Each post will commence in September 2010 and will last for three years.
The Photonics group within the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering has established itself as one of the world leaders for its research on heterodyne photonic systems and ultrafast photonic components for the generation and detection of THz signals.
As part of the MITEPHO network we are seeking a PhD student who will carry out cutting edge research in to to the design, development and characterization of integrated heterodyne THz systems, based on dual lasers and integrated phase lock loops. Such a source offering tuneability should provide THz signal generation for applications ranging from non-destructive detection to wireless high data rate transmission. A Particular attention will be put on developing the agility of the system and demonstrating its tuning range. This PhD position comes with a considerably higher salary than a regular studentship and many opportunities for travel to the other European partners in the network. The post is available for a period of three years.
