Fully Funded PhD Scholarship,University Of Nottingham, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis
Job Description:  Applications are invited for the above fully funded PhD studentship, funded jointly by the University and Glaxo Smith Kline. This studentship will be based in the Molecular and Cell Biology group at the Centre for Respiratory Research at City Hospital Campus situated within the Respiratory Biomedical Research Unit at The University of Nottingham.
The student will join a very active group of researchers in the field of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The group benefits from very senior input from basic scientists and clinicians. The successful student will test the hypothesis that “Influenza infection promotes acute exacerbations of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis through epithelial cell apoptosis and activation of pro-fibrotic pathways” Original research studies will be performed to examine the effect of influenza infection on lung epithelial function. The work will also involve developing disease models of influenza induced acute exacerbations of pulmonary fibrosis and may encompass an industrial element (subject to confirmation from GSK).

The successful student will gain experience in a wide range of analytical and physiological techniques. As such, this project would be well-suited to a student with a pharmacy, biological, or chemistry based first degree. It is essential for students to have a good first degree (1st class Honours or high 2.1) or equivalent, and ideally a UK Masters level qualification (or recognised equivalent) in a basic science subject. All students are required to have established UK residency (as defined by ESRC) at the time of application.

The successful student will register for a PhD from autumn 2010 and will receive a tax-free stipend for three years at published ESRC rates and payment of tuition fees. Stipends may only be paid to UK/EU students who meet ESRC residential eligibility requirements.

Students are strongly advised to contact Dr Gisli Jenkins, Email: gisli.jenkins@nottingham.ac.uk to discuss the project prior to submitting an application.

Application is by CV, together with the names and addresses of three referees, to: Dan Duthie, Room B30 Clinical Sciences Building, City Hospital Campus, Hucknall Road, Nottingham NG5 1PB.

Closing Date: Friday, 30th July 2010
