Job Description: The ENP Authority (ENPA) is currently developing strategies for managing peat resources through its Mire Restoration Project which will restore 5000ha of degraded and eco-hydrologically ‘ at-risk’ habitats. This mitigation work requires an understanding of eco-hydrological characteristics of blanket bogs, including temporal variability in water and carbon fluxes, and a clear picture of the effect that restoration has upon the quantity of water and carbon sourced from the peat-covered headwaters of flood-prone river catchments. This PhD project will deliver, through partnership with ENPA, a proof-of-concept study for the restoration of blanket bogs at a policy-relevant scale, which illustrates how successful mire restoration can be in alleviating the risk of flooding and carbon loss from blanket bogs.

The successful student will be numerate and able to work independently in laboratory and field situations. A background in hydrology, geomorphology or ecology is required, with experience of GIS and Remote Sensing also desirable. Familiarity with data analysis software such as SPSS, Minitab or Matlab is also desirable. UK/EU level fees will be paid, together with a maintenance grant of at least £12,500 pa. You will be based in the School of Geography at the University’s Streatham Campus in Exeter and your supervisors will be Dr Richard Brazier and Dr Karen Anderson.
