Job Description: This PhD studentship, funded with support from the European Social Fund, will be based at the Clinical Photobiology research facilities of the European Centre for Environment and Human Health (ECEHH) at Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro and the University of Exeter Cornwall Campus.
The research focus of ECEHH is on the interconnections between the natural environment and human health. Rather than adopting a conventional approach of investigating threats posed by, for example, air pollutants or specific chemical contaminants, we are looking at how the environment and climate change will affect human health and wellbeing in the coming years.
The Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry with its parent Institutions, the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, are seeking to attract PhD candidates of outstanding ability to join their exciting and rapidly expanding programme of internationally rated research.
As part of our new developments and our commitment to research excellence, applications are invited from suitably qualified biological science or biophysics graduates, 2:1 or above, for a PhD studentship. International students must also have IELTS [International English Language Testing System] score of 7 and above (or equivalent qualification).
Devon and Cornwall have the highest rates of skin cancer in the UK as well as some of the highest radon levels. This studentship will investigate (using aseptic tissue culture and molecular biology techniques) whether radon and ultraviolet radiation exposures interact to produce DNA damage and carcinogenesis in human skin cells.
