PhD Studentships Nanostructured Materials, Biomolecular Engineering, Low Carbon, University of Strathclyde, UK

The Department of Chemical & Process Engineering at the University of Strathclyde invites applications for PhD scholarships in any of the research areas mentioned below, through various funding sources. Stipends for successful students would be at least equal to the usual EPSRC rate, currently £13,590 per year.

The Department’s research is focussed on the interface between chemical engineering and science, and research groups have strong links with Strathclyde’s Physics, Chemistry, and SIPBS (pharmacy and biomedical science) departments. Our aim is to deliver breakthrough research that has application in many important areas such as energy and healthcare. Please see website for more details about the Department’s three research themes summarized below and the research interests of individual staff.

Nanostructured Materials: including synthesis, characterisation and applications of nanoporous materials and nanoparticles to important areas such as chemical energy storage and conversion, gas storage, nanocomposite materials, and purification processes.

Biomolecular Engineering: including optical analytical techniques for bioprocess optimisation, continuous crystallisation of pharmaceuticals, nanobiomaterials and soft matter, and the role of protein aggregation in neurodegenerative disease.

Low Carbon Technology: including carbon capture, hydrogen storage, biofuels, supercapacitors, batteries and fuel cells.

We seek high quality candidates with an excellent first degree in Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Materials Science or Chemical Engineering. Students will have opportunities to attend national and international conferences. Other generic skills courses are encouraged, including scientific writing, presentation and careers workshops.

To apply, please send your CV, academic transcript and covering letter, indicating your research interests and including the contact details of two academic referees, to Caroline Rashid (caroline.rashid@strath.ac.uk) as soon as possible. Applications will continue to be considered until mid November 2010. Informal enquires can also be directed towards Caroline Rashid or to individual members of staff to discuss research projects.
