PhD studentship:The Control of Cholesterol Metabolism in Schwann cells, UK
Job Description: The Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry with its parent Institutions, the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, are seeking to attract PhD candidates of outstanding ability to join their exciting and rapidly expanding programme of internationally rated research.
As part of our new developments and our commitment to research excellence, applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates, 2:1 or above, for a PhD studentship. International students must also have IELTS [International English Language Testing System] score of 7 and above (or equivalent qualification).
Applications are invited for a post-graduate studentship in the laboratory of Dr David Parkinson to study the biology of Schwann cells, the myelinating cells of the peripheral nervous system. The interests of the lab centre upon the roles of transcription factors such as Krox-20, Sox-2 and c-Jun and changes in intracellular signalling that regulate the differentiation, proliferation and survival of this fascinating regenerative cell type. In order to wrap and myelinate axons, Schwann cells must synthesise huge amounts of lipids and cholesterol to provide the necessary cell membrane for the myelin sheath. The project will study the role of the transcription factor Sox-2 in regulating signalling and transcription in the control of cholesterol synthesis in Schwann cells and will involve the use of primary cell culture systems together with virally mediated gene over-expression and conditional knockout transgenic mice (see Parkinson et al., J. Cell Biol. (2004) 164: 385-94; Parkinson et al, J. Cell Biol. (2008) 181: 625-37; Woodhoo et al, Nature Neurosci. (2009)12: 839-47.) Prior experience of cell culture, molecular biology, and protein analysis by immuno-cytochemistry and western blotting would be desirable, although full training will be given to the successful candidate.
Funding Notes
The stipend will be £13,590(to be confirmed, based on full time). Tuition fees will be paid at the home rate. This studentship is open to Home/EU applicants only.
