Two PhD studies will be hosted by the Chair of Animal Ecology TU M?nchen (Freising Weihenstephan), in co-operation with the Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research, Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (Garmisch-Partenkirchen). The positions are available as of April 2008. The studies in wind broken and surrounding spruce stands focus on:
? Variability in space and time of airborne bark beetle kairomones and pheromones.
? Dynamics bark beetle infestation.
? Identification of bark beetle settlements using chemical cues.
? Abiotic factors regulating the release of kaioromones and pheromones.
? Process modelling in space and time.
Methods: mobile and stationary meteorological systems, gas sampling on adsorbent tubes, thermo-desorption-GC/FID/MS analysis, monitoring of bark beetle dynamics, beetle dispersion modelling
The successful candidates must have a university Master of Science degree (or equivalent) with documented expertise in at least one of the following fields: biology, forestry, ecological chemistry, eco-physiology. The project work involves extensive field- and team-work in remote, rugged terrain and requires outstanding technical, analytical and social skills. TUM is an equal opportunity employer.
