PhD THESIS: QUANTUM PHYSICS OUT OF EQUILIBRIUM

In classical statistical mechanics, especially in the last decades, interest has moved almost completely from the study of equilibrium phases to the analysis of off-equilibrium phenomena, such as the non steady state relaxation of coarsening and glasses and the driven dynamics of model systems. On the other hand, the study of quantum out of equilibrium phenomena has started only recently. The main reason is that theory has recently advanced at a level that fundamental questions can finally be addressed and, concomitantly, experiments are able to test theoretical predictions and are providing new conundrums for theoreticians. Experimental examples of such quantum off-equilibrium situations are transport phenomena through ever-smaller nanostructures, even single molecules. On a different front, significant advances in the field of ultra cold atoms have allowed one to engineer quantum many-body systems in almost perfect isolation from the environment and study their non-equilibrium dynamics triggered by a change in a parameter of the Hamiltonian (quantum quenches). Typical questions that will be addressed during the PhD work are: are there general principles governing quantum off-equilibrium dynamics, as it is the case for classical systems ? How can one characterize the non equilibrium steady state of a quantum driven system ? Does an assembly of cold atoms relaxes to equilibrium after a quantum quench ? Both because of the methods we shall use and because of the questions we shall address, the PhD work will be at the frontier between statistical mechanics and condensed matter.

This PhD position will start in the fall 2009. Students interested in it should contact Giulio Biroli as soon as possible. CEA provides fellowships for PhD students. These are not guaranteed therefore also other options have to be considered.
