­The West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) is delighted to announce PhD Training Scholarship in Plant Breeding at WACCI, University of Ghana. Ghanaian, as well as International applicants, are eligible to apply for this scholarship program.

The West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) is a partnership between the University of Ghana (UG) and Cornell University, USA that was established in June 2007 with funding from the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) at the University of Ghana to train Plant Breeders in Africa working on the improvement of African crops in local environments for farmers in Africa.

Course Level: Scholarship is available to pursue PhD programme.

Study Subject: Scholarship is awarded in the field of Plant Breeding at WACCI, University of Ghana.

Scholarship Award: Anglophone Students:

The provision for supervision covers airfare, local travel, and subsistence for supervisory visits to students carrying out research in their home countries as well as allowances for both University of Ghana and in-country supervisors.

Francophone Students:

  • The provision for supervision covers airfare, local travel, and subsistence for supervisory visits to students carrying out research in their home countries as well as allowances for both University of Ghana and in-country supervisors
  • Francophone students benefit from an English language proficiency course before and during their first year at WACCI. The amount covers stipends, accommodation, airfare and tuition for the 2-month pre-enrolment course as well as tuition for the post-enrolment programme, which runs concurrently with PhD coursework.

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for the scholarship:

The WACCI program is specifically for full-time, professional plant breeders who will make their careers breeding new cultivars of food crops.

Prospective students should be under the age of 40 and must:

  • Have an MSc/MPhil in Plant Breeding, Plant Genetics, Plant Pathology, Horticulture, Crop Science, Applied Entomology or Applied Nematology, or an equivalent degree.
  • Hold the position of an agricultural research scientist in a national research institute or university, so that they can return to their home countries to conduct the field research for their PhD theses.

Applicants who have not been instructed in English at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels must have a test score of at least 550 (paper test) or 213 (computer test) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
