Placement Fellowship Scheme ESRC: As part of its Placement Fellowship Scheme the ESRC welcomes applications from academics interested in working in a research capacity in the Strategy Unit, based in the Cabinet Office. The Scheme encourages social science researchers to spend time within a partner organisation to undertake policy relevant research and to develop the research skills of partner employees. The Fellowship will be jointly funded by the ESRC and Strategy Unit while the Fellow remains employed by his/her institution.

Project Title
Various. Current work covers a range of domestic policy issues: education, children & families, health, home affairs, public service reform, life chances and local communities. The successful Fellow may be asked to work on one or more of these policy areas depending on the needs of the team/his or her background. The Fellow should, in any case, have strong analytical skills which can be deployed on a range of policy areas.
Length of Fellowship
Subject to negotiation/project length (normally 3-5 months though could be longer). Strong preference for Fellow to work full-time in the Strategy Unit for the duration of their placement.
Proposed start date
As soon as possible. Exact start date negotiable depending on project needs/candidate availability etc.
Location of Fellowship
Strategy Unit, Cabinet Office.

Expected tasks

  • Exact tasks dependent on needs of project
  • Will work as part of a small team, taking a fresh evidence-based look at a policy issue;
  • undertake analysis and research to build an understanding of problems and their causal drivers;
  • analyse from first principles the rationale for Government intervention and develop policy options and delivery mechanisms;
  • work closely with No 10, other departments and stakeholders;
  • deliver high quality outputs with challenging deadlines;
  • lead specific work streams as required.

Skills required

  • Flexible, first rate analytical, problem solving and strategic thinking skills;
  • Ability to logically structure arguments and write in clear, plain English; and
  • First-rate inter-personal and stakeholder management skills.
