Obesity is becoming a pandemic problem. Since the brain plays a crucial role in the regulation of energy balance, a better understanding of the neuronal mechanisms required to maintain energy homeostasis is of outmost importance.
We have recently identified a hypothalamic specific transcription factor that controls both, locomotor activity and food intake (Sakkou et al., Cell Metabolism 2007). This study for the first time has identified a factor which links hunger to fidgeting providing direct genetic evidence that a neuronal hypothalamic circuit exists that regulates both behaviours at the same time.
We are in the process to delineate this hypothalamic neuronal circuit using genetic tracing approaches in the mouse. This will allow us to define the crucial neuronal subpopulations in the hypothalamus that constitute this important network.
For this project we preferably seek a scientist with a strong background in neurobiology and mouse genetics.
Qualified candidates will have (or be about to obtain) a Ph.D. degree. A strong background in neurobiology and molecular biology is required. Skills in mouse genetics, anatomy and histology would be favorable.
An initial contract of 1 year will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on the circumstances at the time of review.
