Post-Doctoral Fellowships and Doctoral Scholarships at the Leo Apostel Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies

1. Post-Doctoral Fellowships

The Leo Apostel Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies offers post-doctoral fellowships, employment for three years, and two consecutive possibilities for prolongation for an additional three years. Candidates need to have a doctorate degree. The research engages in one of the aspects of the overall scientific activities of the Leo Apostel Centre. Because of the broad scope of the research at the Leo Apostel Centre, candidates with a variety of types of scientific background are welcome, from mathematics and physics, computer science, biology and engineering, to psychology, philosophy, sociology and others. Salary ranges between 29.069 Euro and 45.317 Euro a year.

2. Doctoral Scholarships

The Leo Apostel Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies offers doctoral scholarships, employment for two years and prolongation of an additional two years, hence a total of four years. The purpose is to work towards a doctorate in these four years. Candidates need a university degree equivalent with a bachelor degree to be able to start a doctorate. The subject of the doctorate engages in one of the aspects of the overall scientific activities of the Leo Apostel Centre. Because of the broad scope of the research at the Leo Apostel Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies, candidates with a variety of types of scientific background are welcome, from mathematics and physics, computer science, biology and engineering, to psychology, philosophy, sociology and others. Salary is between 1.665 Euro and 1.998 Euro a month. Since this is a scholarship these are netto amounts.

3. Post Docs and Doctoral Scolarships on Foundations, Mathematics and Stuctures of Quantum Mechanics, and Applications to Modeling in Cognitive Science, Economy and Creativity

Although, as mentioned before, the job offers in Clea cover the Foundations of all scientific disciplines, more specifically we look for candidates to work on the two projects which description can be found on project 1 and project 2. Candidates specifically applying for these projects should mention this in their application. Apart from the project texts in project 1 and project 2, also recent publications of the three principle investigators of these projects, namely Diederik Aerts, Liane Gabora and Bart D’Hooghe,, can be consulted for getting an idea of what the research on these projects will be heading for. More specifically publications pub 1, pub 2, pub 3, pub 4, pub 5, pub 6, pub 7, pub 8, pub 9, pub 10, pub 11, pub 12, pub 13, pub 14, pub 15 (pub 15 is probably the best hint with respect to where research on project 1 might be heading). Several post-doc as well as doctoral scholarships will be employed on the lines of research indicated by these projects and recent publications of the principle investigators involved.

4. How to Apply

A candidate who wants to apply for a post-doctoral fellowship or a doctoral scholarship, needs to contact Diederik Aerts, director of the Leo Apostel Centre at clea@vub.ac.be before January 10, 2009 (make sure to cc to Diederik Aerts’ e-mail address, to be found on his website). The candidate needs to add a curriculum vitae or a link to a website where his or her curriculum vitae is sufficiently presented.

For candidates applying for a doctoral scholarship, a description of the studies that have been undertaken has to be included. For candidates applying for a post-doctoral fellowship, the curriculum vitae has to include additionally (a) a detailed list of publications (ordered chronologically, for publications in ISI-journals the impact factor needs to be indicated), (b) a list of attended conferences, and (c) any other item of scientific value. The application may also contain a short text where the candidate explains his or her specific interest in working at the Leo Apostel Centre, and any material that the candidate himself or herself decides to be of importance for his or her candidature.

A first selection is taken place at Janauary 10, 2009. Scientists, who are interested but not able to apply before January 10, are encouraged to take an informal contact, announcing when their application could be expected. Also questions of a more personal nature (working conditions in the Centre; staying conditions in Belgium; etc…) are welcome, and should be directed to Diederik Aerts, via clea@vub.ac.be.
