The National Institute of Aquatic Resources is searching for a postdoc to investigate recruitment processes of Baltic fish stocks.

The position is open for a 3 year period and is affiliated to the Section of Population ecology and –genetics with a research focus on processes driving survival of cod and sprat early life stages in the Baltic. This includes description and modeling of processes affecting growth, starvation and distribution of larvae and early juveniles based on long-term plankton and hydrography data series as well as measures of individual growth and condition derived from field investigations. The work includes contribution to planning and carrying out internationally coordinated plankton and hydrographic surveys as well as incorporation of these surveys into a future Baltic ecosystem monitoring system.

Qualifications
Candidates must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

The ideal candidate should besides a PhD have the following skills and qualifications:

broad knowledge of marine fish population dynamics,
excellent knowledge on processes affecting fish stock recruitment,
data analytical abilities, particularly in relation to combining biological and physical data from field and laboratory experiments into parameterization of biophysical models,
experience in planning and conducting plankton and hydrographic surveys,
excellent collaborative and interpersonal skills, as evidenced by e.g. group project work and multi-author publications,
excellent skills in writing and speaking English. Danish and German.

The position is designed to coordinate activities with other institutes involved in Baltic ichthyoplankton and hydrographic surveys, which implies regular project related visits to these institutes during the post doc period.

Furthermore the candidate is expected to participate in standard stock assessment surveys in the Baltic to conduct the affiliated ichthyoplankton/early juvenile sampling programs and to conduct specific ichthyoplankton and hydrography surveys as responsible scientific cruise leader.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The position is available from July 1, 2010.

Place of work will be at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources, Section for Population Ecology and Genetics, Charlottenlund Castle, Charlottenlund, Denmark.
