Postdoc or PhD Position in Evacuation of Mixed Populations, Technical University of Denmark

A Postdoc/PhD position is available for immediate start at the Fire Safety Group of the Department of Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby.

The Fire Safety Group conducts research in the field of evacuation in case of fire as well as other topics within the field. The group currently has six members and collaborates in a large international network.

The project is part of a large project on fire evacuation of mixed populations from complex buildings. Existing knowledge on evacuation from complex buildings is not complete. This is a contributing factor in creating insecurity at the initial stage of a fire. Furthermore, the current description of evacuation scenarios focuses on a homogeneous population (healthy adults, preferably men). In order to enable a description of a mixed population, knowledge on fire evacuation of other groups needs to be included. At present, a project of the fire safety group deals with evacuation of children of different age groups. The vacant PhD and Postdoc project is on evacuation of people with disabilities. The project is part of the larger collaboration project KESØ with the Department of Fire Safety Engineering and Systems Safety and shall contribute in producing research-based material that can be implemented in future design processes.

The applicant should have experience in fire safety, pedestrian dynamics, or similar as well as managing large data. A candidate with a good knowledge in evacuation dynamics is preferred. The applicant must be a good communicator and fluent in written as well as spoken English. Experience with team work is beneficial. Postdoc candidates should have demonstrated experience in leading or managing projects.

Postdoc position :
Postdoc candidates should have a PhD in one of the following fields: fire safety, experimental statistics, statistical sociology, or -psychology, pedestrian- or general traffic dynamics, or a similar degree.

In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to

scientific production and research potential at international level
Innovative skills and the ability to generate new ideas
the ability to communicate at all levels such as the provision of scientific advice to public sector authorities
an all-round experience basis, preferably including international experience
the ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

PhD position:
Candidates applying for a PhD scholarship should have a master’s degree in one of the following fields: engineering, fire safety, statistics, statistical sociology or -psychology, pedestrian- or general traffic dynamics, or a similar degree.

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.
