PostDoc position on agent-based modelling of rural areas (Halle (Saale))

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral researcher to work at the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Develop-ment in Central and Eastern Europe (IAMO) in the EU-funded project PRIMA (Prototypical Policy Impacts on Multifunctional Activities in rural municipalities) which is due to start in June 2008.
The post is available immediately with a contract duration of 30 months.
The post involves developing an agent-based modelling framework to identify the main trends in social-ecological dynamics, and in particular in land use, structural change, ecosystem services, and tourism and to identify how policies affects these trends. The research will be done together with a group of researchers work-ing in the field of agricultural economics, cognitive sciences, cognitive sciences and environmental sciences. The modelling framework shall be tested and validated in interaction with stakeholders in collaboration with local partners in case study regions across Europe.
The successful candidate is expected to have some experiences in developing and applying agent-based simulation models, preferably coupled with participatory modelling approaches. Programming skills are required. A PhD in a quantitative social science, agricultural economics, environmental sciences, behavioural sciences, or computer science is required. Experiences in working within an international research environment are expected. Highly effective writing and oral communication skills in English or German is required.
The post will be located in Halle (Saale), Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, at the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Central and Eastern Europe (IAMO) (www.iamo.de) which is one of the leading public research institutions on transition economies. The institute is located in Halle (Saale), an old city with a vibrant research and student environment. The city is very well connected to major railway lines and to the airport Leipzig/Halle.
