Postdoctoral Fellow in Food Borne & Zoonotic Diseases, UK
Postdoctoral Fellow in Food Borne & Zoonotic Diseases of Royal Veterinary College, UK
Job Description: The London International Development Centre has been awarded a £3.5m grant by the Leverhulme Trust to develop an innovative programme to link agriculture and health research for international development in the new Leverhulme Centre for Integrative Research on Agriculture and Health. This brings together research groups from six University of London Colleges, comprising economists, sociologists, anthropologists, nutritionists and epidemiologists to develop a programme of inter-sectoral and inter-disciplinary research, supported by new appointments, studentships and courses.
The new Centre will appoint five Postdoctoral Fellows, one of whom will be based at the Royal Veterinary College and will be expected to contribute to inter-sectoral and interdisciplinary research on food borne and zoonotic diseases. They will play a crucial role in the development of frameworks for the assessments of diseases and their control that take into account both the technical aspects of the disease and the subtleties of the institutional setting in which people operate and the disease circulates. The aim of these frameworks will be used to examine the upstream causes of disease emergence and re-emergence and to minimise the impact of disease presence on food supply and safety. The work will be achieved through co-ordination of PhD students research, independent research and working with the academics in LCIRAH and more widely in the RVC.
You will have experience of researching and working on food borne and zoonotic diseases, preferably in different regions of the world and also at different levels (farm, local, national and international). Your academic background could be in the disease epidemiology, public health or socio-economic analysis of diseases. You will be expected to demonstrate both an ability to research disease dynamics in fine detail and to address disease problems with a holistic systems approach. Ideally you will have experience in working on food value chains and have a strong understanding of the developments in livestock production and value chain systems.
Application Deadline 23rd August 2010.
