Homeostasis of the central nervous system (CNS) microenvironment is essential for its normal function. It is maintained by the blood-brain barrier (BBB) which regulates the transport of molecules from blood into brain and backwards. BBB disruption is a hallmark of many diseases of the CNS, including cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, stroke, schizophrenia and the many other devastating disorders that involve the CNS. In this scenario, prevention and treatment options rely heavily upon optimized pharmacologic access to the CNS. Our research group aims to understand the BBB in the context of adverse perinatal exposures (such as systemic inflammation and hypoxia-ischemia) and adult neurologic disease models (e.g. for stroke and multiple sclerosis) by using a distinctively developmental approach.
We employ a variety of molecular and cellular techniques such as target gene identification, immunohistochemistry, and confocal imaging with genetically modified mouse models and cell culture models of the BBB.

The position is limited to a 4 years period from 01.01.2010 on, therefore we need an enthusiastic and motivated

postdoctoral fellow candidate

to study molecular mechanisms underlying BBB development and disturbance in development and in neurological disease models (see above). Areas of interest include mechanisms endothelial differentiation and dedifferentiation, protein trafficking, developmental biology, neurobiology and microscopy and molecular imaging techniques.

Trainees will have an opportunity to work in a highly interactive multidisciplinary research environment at the University of Würzburg with cutting-edge genomic and proteomic tools. Individuals with a background in molecular imaging techniques and experience in working with laboratory mice are encouraged to apply.
