The AVANCELL research cluster started in 2005 with the focus of new materials and high-performance fibres. We believe collaboration between broad ranges of skills will help us to generate new ideas and innovations and therefore the cluster brings together researchers with different chemistry and material backgrounds. At present, a total of 15 PhD students and senior researchers from Chalmers and Södra Innovation are involved in the research work. The collaboration has so far been extremely successful and for the next phase, we plan to form a research platform with a mix of PhD students and Post-docs.

Now we are opening up a new Post-doc position. The person will study recovery of ionic liquids. The use of ionic liquids to dissolve cellulose fibers/wood has been found to be a very interesting method in order to create new possibilities (processes) for the production of new types of materials, eg. man-made cellulose fibers (similar to viscose or lyocell). However, there are very few studies on the recovery of the ionic liquid, which may be surprising considering that an effective recovery process is of outmost importance for the overall economy of the process (the reason is that the ionic liquids are very expensive). This project will have a system engineering approach starting with an analysis of different recovery options and a continuation with detailed studies of the critical process steps.

The position is for maximum 2 years. The purpose of the position is to provide a platform for scientific training and qualification and allowing competition for external research grants. Some supervision of PhD students is generally included in the tasks associated with the position.

Required qualifications

A suitable background is a PhD in chemical engineering or in adjacent areas. The candidate is expected to work relatively independently, have ability to plan and organize the work, and be able to communicate the scientific results, both orally and in writing, in English.
